Goat Milk Shares & Info

What is a milk (or herd) share? Essentially a contract between farmer and buyer stipulating the buyer’s percentage of ownership in a herd or individual goat. This entitles the buyer to an agreed upon percentage of milk produced. (see SECTION 15.2.(a) G.S. 106‑266.35)

As of 04/28/22 I have two does in milk (Hildy & Astrid) and together they are producing about 3 gallons a day! They are both staying in milk throughout the winter!

Goats are machine milked and milk is run through a filter into glass bottles to reduce risk of any contamination. Once the milk is bottled it is promptly put in the freezer in order to bring the temperature down quickly. This reduces the risk of bacteria proliferation. Milk is refrigerated once it is brought down to about 32 F. It is never frozen. Just really, really cold!
